Why it's different
There are no seabuckthorn plantations here. Every berry is picked from wild shrubs by people who know where they grow.
Dried below 45 °C. Vitamin C degrades with heat, so speeding this up would defeat the purpose.
No sugar-coating, literally. If a seabuckthorn product tastes pleasant on its own, something was added.
Seabuckthorn — *burtse* locally — grows on thorned shrubs along cold riverbeds and up onto the Deosai plains. Picking it is genuinely unpleasant work: the thorns are long, the berries are soft, and there is no way to speed it up.
The taste is a shock the first time. Sharply sour, almost citrus, with a bitter orange edge behind it. It is not a snack berry, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
It is drunk as a hot infusion through the mountain winter, and there is a long-standing local belief in it as a cold remedy. It is one of the most vitamin-C-dense fruits anywhere.
Airtight, cool, dark, away from light. 10 months. Light is what degrades the vitamin C.
From Rs 1,450. Prices include GST where applicable.
